Welcome to Unscripted Experiences. We are a family of four that has decided to go off script. We sold our house, got rid of most of our possessions, and have decided to travel full time in an RV.
In this “Prequel” series, I’ll be taking you through the steps that have led up to this decision and give you some insight into our plan for our first months on the road. Thanks for following along with our adventures.
We are finally on the road. After a year and half plus of planning, we’ve officially hit the road full time.
I’m writing this final Prequel entry from our campground in Garrettsville, Ohio. My goal for this final entry is to shed some light on the craziness that the last couple weeks has been…
Storage…
One of the biggest questions/debates Heather and I had was about what we were storing and how we were going to store it.
We talked about getting rid of everything or renting a storage unit. Heather threw out the idea of buying a storage trailer (since nothing we would keep would need to be in a climate-controlled storage unit).
And since we could theoretically sell the trailer when we are done for about the same that we buy it for… it’s almost like free storage.
Heather found a very lighted used storage trailer that we got at a good price.
And then we proceeded to fill it up.
Stuff… Things… and More Stuff
When we moved out of our house, Heather and I were both amazed by how much stuff we had accumulated over 10 years. And how many things we had kept when we moved… and NEVER used.
Getting rid of all of that was almost therapeutic. But we still kept a lot.
And going through the same process a year and a half later showed that even some of the stuff we kept was unnecessary.
Ultimately, because we had the trailer, it gave us some more flexibility and freedom as we went through the three options for everything…
Bring with
Store
Throw away
We still threw away a lot, but we probably kept more than we would have if we had a smaller storage unit.
Maybe that’ll come in useful when this adventure is over.
But for the past couple weeks, it made the packing and prep process a lot easier.
Last Minute Purchases
The theme of the last couple weeks was organization.
Storage containers, office organization, vacuum bags, etc…
I even bought a second sewer hose storage tube.
We also took advantage of Memorial Day Sales and grabbed some Ryobi vacuums. A wet-dry hand vac and a stick vacuum. (The wet-dry vac came in handy this week…)
The one thing we didn’t end up purchasing that we probably need too… some new camping chairs.
Final Preparations
Everything came down to the wire.
Between me taking on a new job, Heather’s last week at Sprout, and trying to see everyone one last time… it felt like we only had a few minutes a day to move stuff.
As a result, we ended up piling up most of what we needed in the camper with the plan of organizing on the road.
Heather pulled a couple late nights/early mornings, and we got everything moved.
And then… at 11 something on Monday morning… we finally hit the road.
End of Chapter Eleven
This is the end of our ‘Prequel.’ It’s been a long journey to get here, and we are beyond excited about what the next year has in store for us.
It won’t be all sunshine and roses.
But it’ll be a one-of-a-kind experience.
I’ll continue to share the highs and the lows, the good and the bad, and all of the fun things that we get into each week.
Stay tuned.
