Unscripted Experiences: Week 6
Chain Skimmers Water Ski Show, Fishing On Duck Lake, and Playing Golf In Two States.
Welcome to Unscripted Experiences. We are a family of four that has decided to go off script. We sold our house, got rid of most of our possessions, and have decided to travel full time in an RV.
Over the summer we will be traveling through Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, and eventually to South Dakota.
In Week 6, we stayed in a little town right across the border of Michigan into Wisconsin. We got to watch a water ski show and play a round of golf in two states. The kids also spent time fishing on Duck Lake and got to explore a wildlife preserve.
Let’s dive in…
The Chain Skimmers
Finding local experiences is one of Heather’s superpowers.
And on Tuesday, we got to experience a Wisconsin water ski show.
The Chain Skimmers is a group that trains and performs each summer. They have members that range from 13-years-old to over 40.
The show was over an hour and included some amazing feats of strength, agility, and teamwork.
We got to see skiers go over jumps, make turns in the water, and most impressively, they finished with a three level pyramid.
Northlands Wildlife Preserve
One of the more unique experiences was the Northlands Wildlife Preserve.
Heather and the kids got to be a part of a tour where they saw many different animals that had been rescued and now lived in the Preserve.
One of the animals was Hannah from Montana. A bald eagle that had been rescued after getting hit by a car.
One of the really cool things from the Wildlife preserve was the opportunity to learn about the amazing physical characteristics of some of the animals, and the opportunity to test their own strength against that of a hawk.
Bond Falls
The upper peninsula of Michigan truly is the land of waterfalls.
Our final waterfall of Michigan might have been one of the best.
A man-made waterfall, Bond Falls is 50 feet tall and over 100 feet wide at its base. It was formed when the Upper Peninsula Power Company dammed up a nearby river.
The hike was short and super accessible for the kids. They got into the water multiple times and we stopped for numerous pictures.
Playing a Round of Golf in Two States
On Saturday evening we took the kids out to a little, local 9-hole golf course.
It was a small operation, owned and operated by a single family. But it was perfect for taking Taylor and Henry out for their first “real” round of golf.
I’m not sure what they enjoyed more… hitting the golf ball or driving the golf carts.
For Henry it was probably the latter.
The first four holes were played in Michigan. Then you loop back around by the clubhouse to cross the street and play the final 5 holes in Wisconsin.
It took us around 3 hours to play nine holes. The weather was gorgeous and we chased the sunset.
Afterwards, we took the kids over to a local restaurant where we got to try cheese curds for the first time.
Fishing On Duck Lake
Henry bought the first fishing pole in Ohio…
Little did we know that would kick start a love of fishing for both Henry and Taylor.
They both practiced casting on the lake at our first campground.
And then they got to fish in Michigan at the hatchery.
Followed by an unsuccessful attempt in the Upper Peninsula.
And then…
We stumbled across Duck Lake.
Where this fishing “obsession” really kicked off.
Our neighbor at the campground clued us into this hidden gem. And the kids spent almost every day fishing off the pier on duck lake.
Catching fish after fish after fish.
Preview of Week 7
Our next stop is Drummond, Wisconsin. Here’s a snapshot of what we got into during our seventh week on the road as we continued to explore Wisconsin.
